Giuseppe Verdi: Nabucco

Opera Nabucco, Bratislava

Opera performance in Bratislava in the historical building of the Slovak National Theatre

´Nabucco´ (1842), which in a previous production at the Slovak National theatre notched up a record 420 performances over three decades, returns to the venue in a new, updated, guise.

The power of the work resides above all in the crowd scenes and the choruses, of which the ´Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves´ - which at the time it was written came to express the yearning of the Italian nation for independence - retains it popularity to this day.

The opera treats a biblical tale from the Old Testament: the Babylonians under King Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco) invade Jerusalem, destroy the temple of Solomon and take the Jewish nation off into captivity.

The God of the Jews (Jehovah), however, punishes the king by striking him with madness. ´Nabucco´, who has also to contend with the intrigues of his supposed daughter Abigaille, in the end concedes his guilt, acknowledges the power and magnitude of the god Jehovah and returns the Jews to freedom.

Dramma lirico in four parts (sung in Italian).
