Georges Bizet: Carmen
Opera performance in Bratislava in the historical building of the Slovak National Theatre
The story of Bizet´s ´Carmen´ is that of the Spanish guardsman Don José and the Andalusian gypsy girl of the title, a story first committed to paper by the French writer Prosper Mérimée.
The opera is a grippingly realistic musical drama of desire, passion, vengeance and death. Don José´s fate is sealed by his unrequited infatuation with the beautiful and indomitable gypsy girl for whom he sacrifices all that he has and holds sacrosanct, and whose fickle affections he is unable, even so, to retain.
Carmen, who hearkens only to her own nature and lives outside any social norms, prefers to die than to forego her freedom and bind herself for ever to just one man. Carmen´s fiery arias not only seduce the male characters in the story: they have also captured for eternity the hearts of opera devotees the world over.
Opéra comique (sung in French).
