Money and Costs

Currency

The currency is Slovenska Koruna - Sk (the Slovak Crown).

Slovakia uses 50 h (haliers) - 0.5 Sk, 1 Sk, 2 Sk, 5 Sk and 10 Sk coins.

There are banknotes of 20 Sk, 50 Sk, 100 Sk, 200 Sk, 500 Sk, 1000 Sk; Slovakia also has a 5000 Sk note but not that you will see many.

Change Money

There are banks in almost all towns throughout the country; exchange rates tend to vary from bank to bank and some may charge commission on each exchange transaction, so ask first.

Banks are mostly open from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm weekdays and sometimes until 12.00 am on Saturday.

Cash

Cash is always useful and usually necessary for payments of small items like food in grocery stores, meals in restaurants and pubs or for buying items on street markets.

ATMs

Most ATM will accept your bank or credit card from home.

Costs

Slovakia is less expensive than neighbouring Austria, however prices are comparable with Czech Republic, Hungary or Poland.
