  • This is the land of traditional sheep breeding, masonry and farming. They say the cities of Vienna and Budapest were built by masons who came from this land.

  •
  • In the 17th century brave young men earned their living with banditry. The misdeeds of these bandits are often full of legends and later mostly humorous films were being made about them.

      Orava Region
  • Orava has a beautiful and sometimes rough landscape and its nature is quite unique.

  •
  • In the past Orava was one of the most underdeveloped regions of Slovakia, with little industry and a high number of emigrants. Because of these features, nature and folk-architecture have kept their untouched character.
    • Attractions
    • The wooden, Gothical church in Tvrdosin and the museum of the Orava village in Zuberec - Brestova belong to the most important monuments of folk-architecture in the region.

    •
    • In Oravsky Podzamok the castle of Orava proudly towers over the river Orava, and as an eagle's nest it balances on steep rocks, resisting the earth's gravity for centuries.

    •
    • There is a thermal bath with a water temperature of 32 - 38 °C near the village of Oravica, and from there many hiking paths and bicycle routes are leading into the valleys of West-Tatras national park.

    •
    • For those who like aqua-sports and fishing, the lake of the Orava dam provides excellent conditions. From the shore a sightseeing boat leads you to art-island Slanicky ostrov umenia with an exposition of Slovak folk art.

    •
    • Hviezdoslav's gamekeeper's cottage (exposition) is a beautiful spot in the bossom of Orava's nature, and is connected to the lyric-epical work The Forester's Wife by one of Slovakia's most important poets Hviezdoslav.
