Bird Watching on the Danube

Bird Watching on the Danube, Bratislava

Apart from seeing the Great Bustard near Bratislava, you may go bird watching on the Danube, where thousands of other birds are are staying during the winter. Every year they arrive here from the north, in order to survive winter.

The basin Hrušov is part of the river works of the Danube which together with the sluices of Gabčíkovo protect this lower Danube region from floods.

When these river works were built, a stretch of water of 40 km2 came into existance which brings protection to many water birds during winter especially. Each year there are about 120.000 birds wintering here devided into about 40 kinds; you will find here for example thousands of geese.

There is also a variety of birds of prey here, for example the biggest of the sort in Slovakia, the White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), and also the rare Osprey (Pandion haliaetus). This region has been declared natural bird reserve of European importance, called Dunajské luhy (Danube coppices).
